《Detection of Human papillomavirus and Epstein- Barrvirus in oral squamous cell carcinoma
by using the polymerase chain reaction method》

The aim of this study is to understand the relationship between the oral hygiene knowledge, attitude, practice
(K. A. P.)and oral condition of university students in Kaohsiung City. The addition of the oral hygiene courses in the
college or university for students in the future was also investigated. Data were colleted by questionnaire and oral
examination and analyzed. The result of this study showed that the suited subjects included 54% males, 46% females.
The percentage students of Literature College, Philosophy College and Medical College were 23.5%, 19.4% and 57.1%
respectively. There were 23.6% students have fixed opposite sex friends. 27.3% students had the experiment to dental
clinic in the last three month, and 84.1% students will visit dentist when having the troubles of teeth. The college
students' oral hygieneknowledge (K) was fair with a mean (SD) score of 12.54(2.34) (total score is 16). Oral hygiene
attitude (A) was not aggressivewith mean (SD) score of 25.08 (9.02) (total score is 46). Oral hygiene practice (P) was
bad with mean (SD) score of 9.90 (2.11)(total score is 17). The K.A.P. of dental in the medical university is better than
the other university students suggesting the effectiveness of the dental education. The correlation analysis of the oral
hygiene K.A.P., indicatedthat the scores of males are lower than females, especially significantly different in the A. and
P. scores . The K. andP. scores of the medical universitystudents are obviously higher than the college of science. The
college students of liberalarts are higher in A. score. Besides, those who has positive attitude about opposite sex friend,
visits dentist when any oral sign or syndrome occurs, dental check up every half year routinely periodically, and have
oral hygiene instructioninformation provided by the clinic have higher K. A. P. scores than the negative one. The oral
examination of this studyshowed that, the caries prevalence was 60.35% is too high and the prevalence of missing teeth
was 24.25%. The mean ± SD of DMFT index is high 6.59±4.33, indicating theoral condition is very poor. The 31%
CPITN index>2 means needtreatment badly.
The low filling number , but higher CPITN index of males, indicates thattheir oral condition are bad. The low caries
number, high filling number, and low CPITN index indicates the oralcondition of students of the medicaluniversity is
better than the other two university. In terms of departments, the low caries number and CPITN index showedthat the oral
condition of dentalstudents are better than the others. Those who check up every half year routinely has lowercaries
number, higher filling number, and lower CPITN index and are betteroral condition than those who did not have routine
check up. This implied the importanceof routine oral health check up.
The university students' oral hygiene knowledge are fair but their attitude are not aggressive. Their knowledge did
not make them to have good oral habits. There are over 80% of students agree that the oral hygiene information should
be one of their general education courses. There are highly willing to elect this course. Therefore, if is necessary to
develop a oral hygiene educational program for the university students.
